What was the author's purpose or purposes in writing this book? At a glance, it is shocking. You finish the book, and think what the hell was that. Then you start discussing it and someone says, oh it's like that news article or oh that's what happened to so and so' daughter and then it hits you, Chelle is real. She is the face of so many teenagers we see today. So the author's purpose was to highlight the truth of what is happening to some teenagers today.
What motivates a given character’s actions? When Troy starts going out with Xiu, you want to reach out and slap him. How silly can you be to not see all the signs? But Chelle's a teenager. He's a teenager. He was motivated by hormones and all things physical which is sad because if he and Chelle had ended up together, things would have been so different.
